Three people were killed in a fiery crash on the Riverside 91 Freeway near Orange County on Wednesday morning. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Hyundai traveling eastbound crashed into the back of a Honda, one of two stopped vehicles, near the Coal Canyon Road off-ramp.

Authorities said the impact of the collision caused the Honda to burst into flames, and emergency crews pronounced all three occupants dead at the scene. At some point, a fourth vehicle also became involved in the crash, though no further details have been released.

All but one eastbound lanes were closed for approximately five hours to clear the scene and investigate the accident.

Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of car accidents and also one of the most dangerous. Rear-end crashes often result in severe injuries such as whiplash, spinal damage, traumatic brain injuries, and death. In some instances, like this one, the impact of a rear-end collision can trigger dangerous vehicle fires or multi-car pileups, causing catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Rear-end collisions are caused by distracted driving, tailgating, and sudden stops.

Families of individuals killed in car accidents may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim when the death is caused by a negligent or reckless driver. Surviving family members can seek compensation for funeral and burial costs, loss of financial support and companionship, and emotional suffering. Eligible claimants include the deceased’s spouse, domestic partner, children, or other financially dependent individuals. In California, the statute of limitations for filing a wrongful death lawsuit is two years from the date of death.
