On Saturday, a disgruntled customer intentionally crashed his vehicle into a CarMax dealership in Inglewood, injuring several customers and employees. Police said the crash occurred over a dispute just after 2:00 p.m. at the dealership located at the 8600 block of South La Cienega Boulevard.
According to authorities, eight people were injured, two critically, and transported to local hospitals for treatment. Two of the injured were CarMax employees who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver fled the scene but turned himself in at the Los Angeles Police Department Academy moments later and was arrested. The driver was on probation for a 2024 “wet reckless” charge, a reduced plea to driving under the influence (DUI), that involves acknowledging alcohol involvement while pleading to reckless driving.
Police are investigating the crash as an intentional act.
CarMax officials quickly released a statement praising first responders and law enforcement’s swift response in treating the injured and handling the investigation.
“This afternoon, a customer drove through our Inglewood, California store, hitting and injuring several associates and customers who are receiving care at the hospital at this time. This individual was a customer who had his vehicle appraised, and he was arrested by the police,” they wrote.
“We have a plan of action in place that we are currently implementing, and we are working with the authorities on the investigation. We appreciate the authorities’ swift response to this terrible event. As this is an ongoing investigation, please direct any questions to the authorities at this time. The safety of our associates, community, and customers is our top priority. We are deeply saddened by this event, and our hearts go out to everyone impacted.”
The store remained closed Sunday, and no reopening date has been announced.
