A motorcyclist was rescued Saturday after plummeting approximately 100 feet over a hillside while trail riding in the San Bernardino Mountains. Authorities said the incident occurred about a half mile off the Cleghorn Trail in the Cajon Pass. The rider sustained only minor injuries during the fall, but was unable to climb back to the roadway on their own, fire officials said.
Initial plans for helicopter rescue of the motorcyclist were canceled due to high winds and nearby power lines. Members of the specialized Urban Search and Rescue personnel deployed a mechanical rope rescue system anchored by all-terrain vehicles to safely hoist the injured motorcyclist back up the steep hillside. The rider was then transported to a nearby trauma center.
Video released by the San Bernardino County Fire Department showed the technical operation of the motorcyclist rescued from the San Bernardino hillside and also highlighted the role of the department’s all-terrain rescue vehicles. Officials credited the vehicles for faster access to difficult terrain and reducing rescue times and reminded the public to exercise caution when navigating off-road trails and recreational areas.
