A driver was killed Tuesday after fatal a rear-end collision on Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver was traveling northbound near Kenwood Avenue in a 2019 Dodge Ram Big Horn, when he slammed into the back of a stopped box truck.

Witnesses said the driver appeared unable to stop in time and was the sole occupant in the vehicle. A Greyhound bus traveling behind the Dodge narrowly avoided the crash. The bus driver stopped at the scene but was not involved in the collision. The deceased’s identity has not been released pending coroner notification.

All lanes were cleared and reopened by late afternoon and the fatal rear-end collision remains under investigation by the CHP.

Rear-end collisions on major highways often result in fatal injuries when drivers encounter stopped or slow-moving traffic at high speeds. Large speed differentials, limited sight distance, and heavy commercial vehicles can leave little time to react, particularly in mountainous roadways like the Cajon Pass. These crashes frequently cause severe vehicle intrusion and catastrophic trauma, even when only a single vehicle is directly involved.
