On Wednesday, three vehicles crashed on State Route 18 in Apple Valley shutting down traffic for hours. According to the Apple Valley Police, the collision occurred near Tao Road, when a silver Chevy Traverse, a gray Toyota Camry, and a white SUV in the eastbound lanes collided. Details on how the vehicles collided is currently unknown.

Authorities said the impact pushed the SUV off the roadway. It sustained front-end damage and the other two vehicles suffered rear-end damage, one significantly, they said.

The Apple Valley Fire Protection District responded to the scene and attended to the injured, though the number of those hurt and extent of their injuries was not specified. They were transported to areas hospitals.

Both eastbound lanes of SR 18 were shut down as crews worked to clear the scene and remove the vehicles. No additional details have been released and the accident remains under investigation.

Multi-vehicle crashes can be especially dangerous because the force of one collision often triggers additional impacts, exposing occupants to repeated trauma from different directions. When several vehicles are involved, drivers and passengers may be struck more than once or pushed into other lanes or off the roadway, increasing the risk of serious injuries such as head trauma, spinal damage, and internal injuries. Combined with high speeds, the number of vehicles involved, the impact, damage, and injuries escalate, often making them much more severe than single or two-vehicle collisions. For these reasons, residents of the San Bernardino area should be cautious of their driving habits and surroundings when behind the wheel.
