Three people, including a 7-year-old, were killed in a fatal rollover crash on Interstate 15 in San Bernardino on Monday. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a northbound Chevrolet Suburban SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed, abruptly swerved to avoid crashing into the rear of a 2017 Toyota RAV4.

The vehicle lost control during the sudden maneuver and rolled over multiple times before coming to a stop in the center divider near the Calico Road exit. There were five occupants and two dogs inside the vehicle. The driver, one adult passenger, and the child were not wearing seat belts and were all ejected from the SUV. All were pronounced dead at the scene.

One elderly passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered major injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Another passenger, also belted, was hospitalized with moderate injuries. Two French bulldogs survived the crash uninjured.

Though not involved in the crash, the Toyota RAV4 driver did stop and remained at the scene, police said. The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Barstow Office.

Rollover crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents, particularly when occupants are ejected from the vehicle. Safety experts consistently identify seat belt use as one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of fatal injury in a rollover, helping keep occupants inside the vehicle and protected by its safety systems. Although seat belts cannot prevent every injury, they significantly improve a person’s chances of surviving a serious crash.
