A 20-year-old woman was killed in the Calico Dry Lakebed, between Calico Road and Calico Boulevard, on Saturday, October 10, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Investigators report that she was ejected from a Jeep during a crash in the lakebed, when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.

The woman was seriously wounded and transported to Barstow Community Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Police said the driver was operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs but did not state whether he was charged or taken into custody.

The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Barstow Office.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time, increasing the risk of losing control of a vehicle. Off-road environments, such as a dry lakebed, present additional hazards, including uneven terrain, loose surfaces, and unpredictable traction. When a vehicle overturns, occupants face a heightened risk of catastrophic injuries or death, particularly if ejected during the crash.
