Managing Partner Scott M. Rubel, Esq. was recently featured on the New York Executive Podcast, discussing his 35-year career as an applicants’ Workers’ Compensation attorney, his commitment to injured workers, and the experiences that have shaped his approach to practicing law.
During the conversation, Rubel attributed his success to a simple philosophy of putting the client’s needs first.
“I have always believed that by first serving the client, everything else will follow,” he explained. Rather than evaluating a case on how easily it might settle or the fee it could generate, he asks, “Can I help this person?”
Even when he cannot take a case, Scott believes people should leave better informed and takes time to explain their rights and arms them with information.
Inspired to Advocate for Injured Workers
Scott shared how his involvement with the California Applicants’ Attorneys Association (CAAA) transformed his commitment and advocacy for injured workers.
As a member of the CAAA Board of Directors, Scott said he worked alongside attorneys representing injured workers at the highest levels of the profession who inspired him to change his perspective on those trying to navigate California’s Workers’ Compensation system.
“Clients are not just files on a shelf,” he said. “These are people who needed guidance through the quagmire of a very difficult system.”
That perspective has remained central to his practice ever since. A Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation, Scott has served on the CAAA Board of Directors since 1994. He also lobbies for stronger Workers’ Compensation laws and regularly conducts educational seminars for other attorneys, physicians, future practitioners, and union representatives.
