On Thursday, one person died following a multi-vehicle fatal 10 Freeway crash involving a tractor-trailer in Ontario. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Kenworth semi traveling in the westbound No. 3 Lane and pulling a flatbed trailer carrying a large excavator, crashed into the 15 Freeway connector overpass shortly after 3 a.m.
The crash dislodged a metal beam, which fell onto a Toyota Camry traveling westbound in the No. 1 Lane, and was struck by a Honda Accord in the No. 2 Lane. Both drivers were transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, and one later died of her injuries. The tractor-trailer driver remained at the scene, police said, and no alcohol or drug impairment is suspected to be a factor at this time.
The crash shut down all westbound lanes, causing significant traffic through Thursday afternoon, when the scene was cleared and roadways reopened.
Crashes involving tractor-trailers transporting heavy equipment can have severe consequences when a load shifts or a vehicle collides with fixed infrastructure. Even a single point of impact can set off a chain reaction affecting multiple lanes and surrounding vehicles, particularly on busy freeway connectors.
The size and weight of commercial trucks and their cargo can dislodge roadway structures, scatter debris, and create hazards that are difficult for nearby drivers to avoid, often resulting in severe injuries and extensive vehicle and infrastructure damage.
