The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is searching for a driver who struck a pedestrian in a deadly hit-and-run on Interstate 15 in Victorville last week. According to the police, CHP officers and San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel responded to a traffic crash near Nisqualli Road at approximately 1:48 a.m. Once on scene, they found a male pedestrian, but no vehicle or driver. The pedestrian suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the CHP, a preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was walking north on I-15 when he was struck. The driver continued northbound without stopping, fleeing the scene of the accident. Authorities have not yet identified the vehicle, but say it likely sustained damage to the front right side, though if equipped with a bumper guard, it may minimize visible damage.
Authorities have not yet released the pedestrian’s identity, and the incident remains under investigation.
California law requires every driver involved in a crash to stop, identify themselves, and render aid to the injured, if possible. Fleeing the scene of an accident is a serious crime under California law. In addition to criminal consequences, hit-and-run drivers may also face civil liability from the families of those who are killed for funeral expenses, lost income, and other damages.
